Most stores are judged on how much they carry. We would rather be judged on how little we had to reject to arrive at what is here.
ATELIER began with a frustration that will be familiar: searching for something ordinary — a desk lamp, a weekender, a pair of headphones — and finding four hundred results, all photographed identically, none of them explaining why one is better than the next.
So we started the other way round. Rather than listing everything a supplier offered, we picked categories we genuinely use, bought the serious contenders in each, and lived with them. What survived that is what you see. Roughly one product in twelve makes it.
How we choose
Three questions decide it, in this order. Does it still feel good after a year of daily use? Can it be repaired, or at least does the part most likely to fail come off? And is the price explained by the object rather than by the marketing behind it?
A product only needs to fail one of those to be dropped. That is why some categories here have four products and not forty — we would rather show a short list we can defend than a long one we cannot.
